Bio

As a Master's of Education student at Aga Khan University (AKU), I am deeply committed to environmental sustainability and its integration into educational initiatives. My passion for climate action has driven me to create impactful solutions and raise awareness within my community in Dar es Salaam and beyond, through various environmental programs and projects. In 2023, I founded the AKU Environmental Club, which has become a platform for engaging students in critical environmental conversations and projects. The club works not only on the AKU campus but also extends its influence to schools in the Dar es Salaam area. Through this initiative, I have facilitated environmental awareness campaigns, coordinated tree planting activities, and educated students on sustainability practices. This project has provided a space for students to explore their role in protecting the environment and empowered them to take tangible action in their schools and neighborhoods. My commitment to climate action extends beyond the university. In Kenya, I have worked with a diverse group of stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents, and local communities. I spearheaded the Green School Project, which encourages schools to adopt sustainable practices such as waste management, water conservation, and gardening project. One key component of this initiative has been the Plastic Recycling Program, which helps schools reduce their plastic waste by setting up recycling systems and educating students and teachers on how to manage and repurpose plastic materials. I have also led numerous Tree Planting Initiatives, collaborating with local organizations, schools, and volunteers to restore green spaces and create environmental awareness. The long-term goal of these efforts is to combat deforestation, promote biodiversity, and educate the next generation about the importance of trees in mitigating climate change. I also initiated a termly Beach Cleaning Exercise, which has brought together local communities, including students and parents, to clean and preserve coastal areas. This project addresses the environmental threat of marine pollution and encourages collective responsibility for the conservation of our natural resources. Through my work in both Tanzania and Kenya, I have made a lasting impact on environmental education and sustainability, motivating individuals to take action in their communities. I believe that climate action begins with education and community engagement, and I am proud to have been part of these transformative efforts. Being nominated for the Social Transformers Award in the Climate Action category would be an incredible honor and an affirmation of the collective efforts of everyone involved in these initiatives. My journey is just beginning, and I am committed to continuing this important work to create a more sustainable future for all. https://khadijasuleiman2023.blogspot.com/2024/02/the-journey-of-khadija-secondary.html http://heritage.ismaili.net/node/38523 https://www.aku.edu/news/Pages/News_Details.aspx?nid=NEWS-003013
